Achieving Global Benchmarks for Waste Management in Oman

The 3rd International Conference for Waste Management Oman aims to enable the Sultanate's Vision for better waste management and achieving global benchmarks in the region.
 
Ensuring the importance of a better waste management strategy and to enable the Sultanate's vision towards achieving a zero waste culture, the 3rd International Conference for Waste Management Oman, held with the support of the Muscat Municipality, commenced yesterday, 7th April 2014 at the Al Bustan Palace in Muscat, Oman.

Delivering the first session of the day was Said Khalaf Al Abri of Be'ah Oman (Oman Environmental Services Holding Co.). Al Abri addressed on the strategic development plan for the waste management sector in Oman and gave an overview of the current key projects in the pipeline. He spoke on the approaches being made to involve the general public and the industry towards this endeavour. Presenting the first international case study was Martri Malmivirta, Co-founder of the Finnish Material Efficiency Alliance (FMEA). Malmivirta study showed how to integrate technologies and services of different waste streams to maximize materials and energy yields, and Finland's success in building such an environment. FMEA is also the Gold Sponsor at the event.

One of the key themes of the conference looked into Prioritising Hazardous Waste Management. On a local front, M Goutham Reddy of Al Ahlia Services, and Silver Sponsor at the conference, presented on how to manage hazardous waste by saving and recycling at source. He also spoke on the legislations of trans-boundary movement. Presenting from a medical front on effective medical waste management was Marianna Kotze, COO and Chief Nursing Officer at Star Care Hospital and N. Porchelvan of Galfar represented the construction sector. Where Kotze spoke of how recycling medical waste could be a profitable alternative for hospitals, Porchelvan spoke on the probable improvements needed within the construction vertical.

Experts from the regional counterparts also presented their expertise on hazardous waste. Dr. Mohammad Aref who is the QHSSE Manager at Weatherford, UAE, addressed on waste handling and disposal of NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material) within the oil and gas industry. Speaking on combating hazardous substances such as organic pollutants was Dr. Ali Nasser Lulwa from Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR). Experts were also seen discussing methodologies and best practices on how best to recycle hazardous waste.

Day one of the conference ended with a discussion on how the waste management hierarchy can be put into action. Giving a joint presentation from ORYX GTL (Qatar) were Greenhouse Gas Management Specialist, N. Pon Saravanan and Environmental Specialist, Ismail Al-Khabani. The presentation was on the initiatives and undertakings by ORYX GTL on waste reduction, recovery, reuse and recycle. Stuart Mee of Carillion Alawi addressed on achieving a sustainable strategy in the construction sector. The closing panel discussed on programs to disseminate the importance of source segregation.

The final day of the International Conference for Waste Management Oman commenced today and will address themes on achieving global benchmarks and setting the perspective for recycling initiatives. Topics will range from key factors to consider in privatising the waste management sector from Sultan Qaboos University and the development of new landfill projects in Oman by Landfills Manager, Tarik Namour at Be'ah Oman. Experts like Dr. Saif Al Hajari (Friends of the Environment Centre), Dr. Hisham Sherif(Engineering Tasks Group) and Kalle Hashmi(IRENA) will address on environmental and moral perspective of electronic waste, integrated municipal solid waste management, and waste heat recovery and utilization respectively.

Attendees today will also hear of best practices and case studies from international experts. Speakers will include Dr. Joachim Wuttke (Federal Environment Agency Germany) presenting on legislations that were effective in improving waste management in Germany and Kavickumar Muruganathan (Singapore Environment Council) will present on Singapore's clean and green transformation to a first world country. Rehan Ahmed (Supreme Council of Environment – Kingdom of Bahrain) will present on Bahrain's experiences to achieve zero waste. Sessions will also address waste management at Muscat International Airport and Port of Salalah and the strategic direction for alternative energy in the Sultanate of Oman.

Attendees at the conference saw participation from across various industry sectors and government bodies. Sponsored by FMEA, Al Ahlia Environmental Services, Polyeco and Rukun Al Yamani Environmental Services LLC (Ray Eco-Logic), the event is also supported by the World Safety Organization.
