International Conference for Waste Management Oman to delve into strengthening the legislative framework for effective waste management.

5 February, Oman

Waste management in Oman has seen a significant rise in the past few years. With the establishment of the Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be'ah) whose mandate is to streamline plans for waste management in the country, Oman is taking great initiatives towards achieving the goal for zero waste.

In a recent report on Muscat Daily, the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources (MRMWR) is taking steps to modernize waste management. The Ministry is looking to better their landfills with waste recycling stations on site to utilize modern dumping techniques. The Muscat Municipality is also implementing an extensive campaign for cleanliness in the capital. They aim to raise awareness of a clean neighborhood with a recent initiative of putting out waste at certain times in the day.

With all the achievement and positive outcomes, Fleming Gulf is organising the 3rd International Conference for Waste Management Oman on the 7 to 8 April 2014 at the Al Bustan Palace, A Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Muscat Oman. The 2013 edition was organised by the Muscat Municipality in co-operation with Fleming Gulf and held under the patronage of the Minister of Ministry of Regional Municipalities & Water Resources. The conference saw participation from 18 countries featuring 35 speakers and panelists and over 300 delegates for the two day event.

The conference will delve into the recommendations made at the event last year, how much has been implemented and what needs to be done next. Key features for the conference this year will be on strengthening the legislative framework for effective waste management and setting the perspective for integrated waste strategies. Other topics will also look into the benefits of privatising the waste management sector and fostering a recycle-friendly atmosphere. Hazardous waste and effective medical waste management will also take key precedence. Speakers will include experts from Arab Urban Development Institute(Saudi Arabia), Supreme Council of Environment(Bahrain), Development of Muscat International Airport & Port of Salalah (Oman), Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research(Kuwait) and UN ESCWA (Lebanon) amongst others.

Supported by the World Safety Organization, the conference is sponsored by Al Ahlia Environmental Services, Polyeco Waste Management and Finnish Material Efficiency Alliance(FMEA).
