The holidays are a time of glitz and glamour or just dressing comfortably while enjoying time spent with family and friends.

At the recent "Holiday Elegance" fashion show held at the Sussex County Fairgrounds Conservatory to benefit Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, holiday and winter fashions from three local stores --Blue and Style Counsel, both of Warwick, N.Y., and Onore Clothing, of Sparta, were modeled by 20 celebrity models in front of 130 guests.

Onore Clothing featured a mix of suits for men for business or holiday wear. One ensemble featured a sports jacket worn over a red collared casual shirt and paired with dark pants.

"Red is nice for the holidays," said Edna Cintron, co-owner of Onore, "Some jackets go well with jeans. For men who don't like to wear ties, we have graphic shirts that make a statement on their own," she said. For a more casual appearance, a man might choose to wear dress jeans or tan khakis.

For the man who has no idea what to wear to a holiday gathering, Onore has fashion consultants on staff that can help put together a look for you, she said.

The "Holiday Elegance" fashion show, now in its fourth year, serves as a fundraiser for the nonprofit organization that offers hospice care and bereavement services to anyone in need, even if they are unable to pay.

Held during National Hospice Month, the event helps to bring awareness to the services Karen Ann Quinlan offers and raises funds to help defray other costs, including the new Joseph T. Quinlan Bereavement Center in Frankford, which opened in April, according to Lee Ellison, director of marketing for the organization.

Local celebrities, such as doctors and local business owners, volunteered their time to walk the runway in two different outfits and Krave Events in Newton offered patrons warm cuisine, including shepherd's pie and apple cranberry crisp.

One of the models of the evening was Dawn Salmon, of Sparta, who became involved with Karen Ann Quinlan nine years ago when she lost her child while she was 34 weeks pregnant.

"It was heartbreaking, but they were there for me and I always promised myself I was going to give back any way I could," she said.

She has volunteered with the organization since.

Salmon, whose evergreen velvet dress from Style Counsel was a huge hit of the evening, said she loved the outfit so much she decided to purchase it.

Bob Maxwell, who co-owns two stores, Style Counsel and Blue, located in adjacent storefronts on Main Street in Warwick, N.Y., with Tim Mullally, who attended the Holiday Elegance event, said that the choice for a woman for holiday wear would depend on where she will end up. One outfit featured on the fashion runway, a blush-colored lace top with paisley palazzo pants, would be ideal.

"That would be great for a hostess at home or if going out someplace," he said.

A black sweater, scarf, vest and pencil skirt modeled by Linda Jordan, of Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, could be worn to the office or to a holiday event, he said.

Salmon also modeled a vest over a long hoodie from Blue, which, Maxwell said, is an example of a more casual "afternoon" look.

"We also have an assortment of tunics in different fabrics that could be worn with leggings if you want to be casual and still look really cool," he said.

Aaron Tirpack, funeral director at Mack Memorial Home in Secaucus and a lifelong Sussex County resident, accompanied Salmon down the runway wearing a fitted suit with thin red stripes and a checkered pattern.

His dad, Dr. Edward Tirpack, who runs Sparta Dental Designs, has supported Karen Ann Quinlan over the years and will host an upcoming "Dental Day for Hospice" where dentists at his practice and their professional team will donate their time and proceeds from the day to the organization.

"My dad is so involved and I really believe in what (Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice) does, how can you not support them?" Tirpack said.

With last year's event bringing out a crowd of nearly 90 and raising close to $8,000, Ellison said that proceeds from this year's show will surpass that.

"It just keeps getting better and better each year," she said.
