Lewisville, TX — According to a study that analyzes the demand and supply for oncology services, the demand for oncologistswill increase by 48 percent, by the year 2020. The supply, however, is expected to grow at a much slower rate. The same study also highlights the disparity between a number of male and female oncologists.

As of now, only 30 percent of oncologists in the US are women. According to Dr. NeerjaDesari, a board certified Medical Oncologist and Hematologist working for Lewisville Flower Mound Oncology Center, it will be impossible to meet the demand without encouraging more women to become oncologists.

Dr. Kiran Kancharla, another female member of the Lewisville Flower Mound Oncology Center team, highlighted the role of women in oncology and said, “Women are natural caregivers, and many patients feel more comfortable being treated by a female oncologist. This is particularly true in case of breast cancer, gynecologic cancer, and other types of cancers more prevalent in female patients.”

He believes that every institute needs to play its part in encouraging women in oncology. “In order to overcome the rising demand for oncologists, it is essential to encourage more women to join the league. Medical institutes and cancer care centers can play a key role in this mission.”
