The Three Most Common Cancer Treatment Options

Dr. James D. Mackey addresses the different cancer treatment options available to patients.

Southlake, Texas – Many patients are not aware that there are different types of cancer treatment available to them. This depends on the type of cancer and at how far the cancer has progressed. Most of these treatments are successful in 50 percent of the cancer cases reported.

“There are so many therapies out there available for treating cancer today,” says Dr. James Mackey.” These various treatments are open to all cancer patients around the world. It is my job to determine which of these options is going to be most successful for each patient in his or her unique situations,”

These are some of the treatment options available to cancer patients:

• Chemotherapy – this is the most common type of treatment offered to patients. It’s a mixture of chemicals injected slowly into the blood stream which targets the cancer cells. The medicine can also be taken orally. Chemotherapy may also kill good cells in the body. It may have side effects such as nausea and hair loss.

• Radiation Therapy – commonly known as radiotherapy. This form of treatment involves the slow emission of radiation waves targeting the affected part of the body. These radiation waves destroy the cancerous cells.

• Hormone Therapy – this is used on types of cancers caused by hormones in the body such as prostate cancer. The hormones are removed from the body or are prohibited from producing respective hormones which causes the cancer cells feeding on them to stop growing.

“These are not the only options,” Assures Dr. Mackey. “The list has a lot more to offer for each specific case. Once you undergo a diagnosis, an oncologist will suggest the ideal treatment for your specific case.”
