New US Passport Regulations Might Deny Millions Travel

Posted February 1, 2016 by kumkum

The U.S. government has issued stricter rules for state-issued IDs including drives licenses, and passports. Four states have refused to meet these rules.

In 2005, following the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission, President Bush signed the REAL ID Act. It requires new technology as well as more proof of identity before an ID can be issued. This makes it more difficult for criminals to pass forged documents.

Fear of “Big Brother” interfering in state’s rights caused the legislatures of four states to either refuse to comply or simply slow down the approval process, leaving their citizens in the unenviable position of not knowing which documents they need to prove their identity when traveling.

The law is now in effect. What happens next?

Louisiana asked for and received a waiver good until October 10 of 2016. Citizens from Louisiana can still use a driver’s license to prove ID until then. With the upcoming elections, a new governor should be able to address the issue.

New York received a waiver. Travellers from that state can continue using current drivers licenses.

Minnesotans must have official US passports if they want to fly domestically.

New Hampshire received a waiver that lasts only until June 1 of 2016. The state legislature must make a decision to comply with the regulations by that time.

"Two-thirds of Americans do not have passports," stated NH Governor Margaret Hasson. "Lack of access to federally accepted identification could also hurt our businesses."

With the new regulations and resultant confusion It is important that US domestic travellers, check US passport requirements before attempting to travel. Visit the U.S. Passports & International Travel website for more information.
