Sony wird jedes PlayStation VR Headset zusammen mit einer speziellen Prozessoreinheit ausliefern, welche in einer kleinen schwarzen Box steckt, die mit der PlayStation 4 verbunden werden muss. Das Headset selbst lässt sich via HDMI-Kabel, einem AUX-Kabel und einem Stereo-Audio-Stecker an der Prozessoreinheit anschließen. Technische Einzelheiten zum Inhalt der schwarzen Box nennen die Japaner nicht, klar ist daher nur, dass sie unter anderem zur Berechnung von 3D Audio genutzt wird und verschiedene Anzeige-Modi für Filme und Spiele ermöglicht. Konkret bedeutet das, dank der Prozessoreinheit lässt sich beim Tragen von PlayStation VR beispielsweise der sogenannte „Cinematic Mode“ starten, in dem sich Nutzer Inhalte oder auch aktuelle, ganz normale PS4 Spiele auf einem riesigen virtuellen Display darstellen lassen können. Darüber hinaus bietet die Prozessoreinheit einen Mirroring-Mode, durch den sich das, was ein Nutzer gerade in der virtuellen Welten erlebt, zusätzlich auch auf dem Fernsehbildschirm darstellen lässt, und schließlich gibt es noch einen Anzeigemodus, der es erlaubt, auf dem Headset-Display und dem Fernsehbildschirm unterschiedliche Inhalte auszugeben.Auch wenn Sony kaum technische Details zur Prozessoreinheit preisgibt, bekannt ist, sie wiegt 365 Gramm und ist recht kompakt, was darauf schließen lässt, dass darin nicht allzu leistungsfähige Prozessoren stecken können. Mit Fernseher, PlayStation 4 und PlayStation VR wird die Box über drei HDMI-Ports, einen USB-Anschluss und ein AUX-Kabel verbunden.

Neben der Prozessoreinheit und Kabeln liegt jedem PlayStation VR Headset auch die Software PlayRoom VR bei. Dabei handelt es sich um eine Sammlung von sechs kleineren Virtual Reality Spielen, die von Sonys japanischem Entwicklerstudio geschaffen wurden.Apropos Spiele: Alle technischen Feinheiten eines Gaming-Systems sind natürlich irrelevant, solange es nicht auch geeignete Spiele dafür gibt. Laut offiziellen Angaben arbeiten daher bereits rund 230 Entwickler und Publisher an 160 ganz unterschiedlichen Erfahrungen für PlayStation VR, 50 davon sollen bis Ende des Jahres erscheinen. Zu den 2016 erwarteten Titeln gehören beispielsweise EVE: Valkyrie, Rez Infinite, Wayward Sky, RIGS: Mechanized Combat League, Tumble VR und Until Dawn: Rush of Blood. Die Neuauflage des 14 Zoll Boliden bietet nun einen leistungsfähigen Intel Core i7 Prozessor der sechsten Generation (Skylake), DDR4-Arbeitsspeicher, eine PCIe-M.2-SSD sowie eine Thunderbolt 3 Schnittstelle.
