Kinetic Massage Works successfully treats tennis elbow with myofascial release massage therapy

Tennis elbow is not restricted to tennis players. With the ever increasing amount of time people spend on their computers, tennis elbow and golfers elbow have become far more common in the general population. The reasons are complex and are generally associated with repetitive motion that can cause imbalances, tension, spasms and the development of scar tissue.

But how can scar tissue develop in sedentary people? “Good question,” says Micaela Liem, CEO of Kinetic Massage Works in Houston, Texas. “Tennis elbow and golfers elbow are two separate conditions, but the underlying cause is generally a binding fascia issue that develops with muscle imbalance and repetitive movements.”

The human body has fascia everywhere and it's the tissue that lies between the muscles and the skin. Fascia is a dense connective tissue made from the same material as tendons and ligaments. When it is overused, it becomes scarred and tight, resulting in pain.

“Think of fascia in its healthy state as clear plastic wrap and in its unhealthy state as bubble wrap,” says Liem. “When it gets to the bubble wrap stage, it is scarred and tired and now constricts the the muscles and inhibits free movement, also pressing affected muscles against nerves and causing numbness and radiating pain.”

Tennis elbow and golfers elbow are not commonly associated with massage as a treatment modality, however these approaches are highly effective in the hands of professionals with an in-depth understanding of anatomy, physiology and kinesiology.

“Being in constant pain can alter the course of your life. We cannot function either physically or mentally when in pain,” says Liem. “At our massage clinic in Houston, Texas, we treat the source of the pain rather than the symptoms. We have been trained to trace the source and treat it holistically using a variety of techniques tailored to the specific problem the patient is experiencing.”

Deep tissue massage and myofascial release work are top current treatment modalities proven to restore the fascia to a healthy state, release constriction and pressure on the nerves and allow free movement of muscles and tendons. In turn, this reduces reliance on prescription painkillers and their attendant health risks, side effects and potential for overuse, dependency and abuse.

“Where you feel the pain is not always the origin of the issue, for example, pain in the arm and numbness or tingling can be caused by over development of fascia tissue in a particular area. By releasing myofascial tissue using deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy and stretching, we go to the root of the issue to restore balance to your body and your life,” says Liem.

Kinetic Massage Works designs each pain relief massage therapy session as a stand-alone session tailored to match the client's needs at the time. “Every body is different, so it is essential to follow up every session with a progress assessment,” says Liem. “As the musculoskeletal system adjusts and fascia rehabilitates, we find that a follow-up session may require a different massage modality.”

The effectiveness of massage therapy modalities in myofascial conditions speaks more to the advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology of the therapist than it does to their sheer strength. Sometimes more gentle movements may be necessary while at other times or in other areas a deep tissue approach with more pressure is required.

“We have decades of combined experience working with chiropractors, physical therapists, orthopedic surgeons, and neurosurgeons in everything from accident rehabilitation to sports injuries to chronic issues such as tension headaches, sciatica, and TMJ,” says Liem. “We are confident we offer a comprehensive, individualised and effective service to relieve tennis and golfers elbow.”
