Can Massage Therapy Deal With A Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder is a particularly painful and distressing condition with an often enigmatic etiology. Frozen shoulder is a generic term referring to any pain in the shoulder or shoulder blade area that limits range of movement. This can result in an inability to perform activities of daily living, not to mention the disruption to a training or practice schedule.

“The people who most often suffer from frozen shoulder syndrome are sports people, indicating that frozen shoulder originates with repetitive strain, but in actual fact it can happen to anyone, including sedentary office workers who may be hunched over their desks for long periods of time,” says Micaela Liem, CEO of Kinetic Massage Works.

The most trying part of frozen shoulder is the limitation of movement caused by pain and muscle spasm. However, mobilisation of the shoulder is essential to maintain its effective functioning and limiting movement of the joint can worsen pain and be detrimental to its range of motion over time.

“The old adage of resting the joint may not be effective in dealing with this condition long term,” says Liem. “Unfortunately, the joint can't be used properly either, so sufferers of frozen shoulder are in a catch 22 where there doesn't seem to be a solution and activities of daily living, work, exercise or sports participation are all negatively impacted.”

On the up side, massage therapy has shown positive benefits in the process of recovery and in preventing the condition from recurring. “Every body is different, but one of the common factors we see in frozen shoulder is a very tight muscle spasm, known as a trigger point, that develops in the subscapularis muscle,” says Liem. “Once we address this spasm, recovery can proceed.”

The subscapularis muscle is not easy to access and it requires a specialist with a detailed understanding of anatomy and physiology to get to it and then use the right techniques to release the spasm.

“The first thing we do when we see a patient with frozen shoulder is to understand how the injury occurred,” says Liem. “Most often, people can't pinpoint an exact movement that caused the spasm. If there was a particular movement, then we know we may be looking at something more serious than a trigger point, for example, a muscle strain or even a small tear.”

Assessment is a vital part of massage therapy for frozen shoulder. “We always proceed with extreme caution with every patient. Because frozen shoulder is a catch-all term, we need to find out exactly what we're dealing with before we begin therapy to release the spasm and rehabilitate the joint along with its tendons and muscles,” says Liem.

Two massage modalities that have shown success with frozen shoulder are trigger point massage and sports massage. At their Houston, Texas practice, Kinetic Massage Works therapists are trained in multiple techniques to identify and then correctly treat multiple conditions that can cause pain and restrict range of motion in the shoulder area.

“What we have found is that trigger point massage is highly effective in improving pain and range of motion in the shoulder in a relatively short period of time,” says Liem. “With insight into musculoskeletal conditions as well as in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology, we can restore functioning and reduce pain without long-term reliance on medication to control pain.”

Trigger point therapy and deep tissue massage can relieve much of the pain over the course of a few sessions. Often clients have partial relief after one session of frozen shoulder therapy and in subsequent sessions obtain full relief. Kinetic Massage Works goes further than massage by providing guidance on home treatments that will prevent recurrence of this painful condition.
