There are four varieties of built-in oven to make a selection from: single ovens, double ovens, double built-under ovens and the more compact type of oven. In the marketplace as a whole, all are typically roughly 60cm wide - but are wide-ranging in terms of height. Single ovens are more affordable than double ovens. A single oven will usually cost £250 to £350, while quality double ovens are likely to set you back over £500. Forking out for a higher-priced oven will usually bring you more powerful features, but there's a chance you may not need all of these. There is always the gas versus electric debate. For now, electric ovens are the most popular choice by a long-run. As with gas ovens, they must be installed by a professional. The advantage of cooking with an electric oven, particularly one with a fan, is that the heat is distributed relatively evenly all around the inside of the oven. Electric ovens typically operate at a more accurate temperature than gas, and there is an extremely wide range to choose from – you'll spot more electric single ovens when browsing online or in brick-and-mortar stores than any other kind of oven. By contrast, gas is the cheapest cooking fuel, so consumers can expect to save money by opting for a gas oven. However, the savings aren’t monumental – there’s roughly a £25 yearly difference between the cheapest-to-run gas oven and a top-of-the-line electric oven. Many gas enthusiasts and experienced chefs feel that the potential cost savings aren't enough to tempt them over to electric ovens.
