Physics is often described as the study of energy and matter. It concerns how matter and energy relate to each other, and how they affect each other through time and space. Physicists ask the basic questions: How did the Universe start? How is it made and from what? How're things changing? What rules govern their conduct?
Physicists can be partitioned roughly into two camps: experimental physicists and theoretical physicists. Experimental physicists design and carry out careful investigations on a wide range of natural phenomena, often under conditions that are atypical of our everyday lives. For example, they can investigate what happens to the electrical properties of the materials at very near absolute zero temperatures (-460 ° F; -273 ° C) or measure the energy characteristics emitted by very hot gases. Theoretical physicists propose and develop models and theories to explain the results of experimental observations in a mathematical way. Therefore experiment and theory have a broad overlap. Experimental physicists, therefore, remain keenly aware of the current theoretical work in their fields, while theoretical physicists must know the results of the experimenters and the context in which the results need to be interpreted.
Distinguishing classical physics and modern physics, too, is useful. Classical physics has its origins in the studies of Galileo and Newton on mechanics approximately four hundred years ago, and similarly in the work of Ampere, Faraday, Maxwell and Oersted in the fields of electricity and magnetism hundred and fifty years ago. This physics handles objects that are neither too large nor too small, moving at relatively slow speeds (at least as compared to the speed of light: 186,282 miles per second or 299,792 kilometres per second).
Three achievements marked the emergence of modern physics in the early twentieth century. The first, in 1905, was the brilliant model of light that Einstein used as a stream of particles (photons). The second, which followed a few months later, was his revolutionary relativity theory which described objects moving at speeds close to light speed. The third breakthrough came in 1910, with the discovery of the atom nucleus by Rutherford. Rutherford's work was followed by Bohr's atom model, which in turn stimulated de Broglie, Heisenberg, Schroedinger, Born, Pauli, Dirac's work on quantum theory and others. Today the avalanche of exciting discoveries continues in modern physics.
