DUI Lawyer Rhode Island on Potential New Year Laws in 2024

New laws could be introduced according to leading DUI lawyer Rhode Island in 2024.

Lawmakers in Rhode Island are wasting no time in focusing on the introduction of new legislation to strengthen the penalties for drivers that drink and drive in 2024. Three proposals regarding DUI offenses were revived last week with the lawmakers believing that drunk driving is a serious concern in the state.

One of the proposals is to extend the “look back” period from five to ten years. Another is to allow officers to temporarily confiscate license plates of repeat offenders. The third, from a former Rhode Island State Police major, is to introduce legislation that enhances fines and sentences for impaired drivers that cause injury or death due to their drunk driving.

These three proposals were all introduced during the legislative session last year. They never made it to the General Assembly for vote, two proposals cleared the House, but did not make it past the Senate. The focus is to put tougher measures in place to reduce the number of drunk drivers on the Rhode Island roads at any given time. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation estimate that there are around three thousand impaired drivers arrested each year throughout the state.

The lawmakers, along with many families that have lost loved ones due to drunk driving believe it is a choice and not an accident. It appears that it is getting worse each year in the state and now it’s time for something to be done about it. With stricter measures, lawmakers are hoping that people who are impaired will think twice before getting behind the wheel of a car and driving.

John Grasso of the Law Office of John Grasso, said “We are expecting to see stricter DUI laws in the coming weeks. We are expecting to see around twelve DUI related proposals being introduced and discussed in the 2024 session. As criminal defense lawyers, we work with clients that have been arrested on DUI charges in Rhode Island, helping them retain their license and reduce their sentences, based on the circumstances surrounding the case.”

John Grasso provides a complete service to clients that are facing DUI charges. As a leading DUI lawyer in Rhode Island, the demand for his services continues to rise after seventeen successful DUI arrests were made in Rhode Island over this past holiday season.
