The pressure of school tests and exams influences how a child thinks feels, and behaves. Nerves can become unrelenting and overwhelming, so children can become tired and irritable.
To help parents, Improve Tuition held a seminar to help parents identify stress in their child.
To help parents, Improve Tuition held a seminar to help parents identify stress in their child.
Watch out for the signs of stress
Firstly, parents drew a consolidated list to identify serious signs of stress.
Worrying a lot
Feeling tensed
Getting headaches
Getting stomach pains
Not sleeping well
Is easily irritable
Not interested in food
Seems negative
Seems low in their mood
Seem hopeless about the future.
We explained anxiety and anxiousness can have a detrimental effect on a child’s physical and mental health and wellbeing. It is therefore vital that a parent, the child’s tutors in Bradford or study partner can openly talk to keep perspective of the situation.
Seeking assistance from a supportive school teacher - who can talk to your child if they feel there are not coping - may be helpful. Sometimes, having a third person involved is more helpful than a parent advising. Your child may listen more but make sure they are free to talk without distractions.
But make sure your child is always involved as much as possible.
What to say
Then, the seminar looked at coping strategies.
By helping your child to learn how to manage their exam stress, they can reduce the negative impacts of stress and so improve their learning ability.
Remind them to:
eat well, avoid high fat, high sugar and high caffeine
get enough sleep (about 8 to 10 hours for teenagers)
emotions like anger and anxiousness from time-to-time is normal
creating a catastrophe in the head without evidence is wrong
realise and think through the choices if things do not work out
have a good balance of revision and relaxation
encourage them to get outside and exercise
diverting their attention when they're getting stressed
Suggest an activity that you can do together to help distract them from their worries.
What do I do if the stress is not improving?
If you feel that their stress isn't improving, get help and support from your family GP.
The seminar ended with refreshments and everyone seemed to have enjoyed the afternoon.
