IMARC Group’s recently published report titled, “Phenol Market – Industry Trends, Prices, Manufacturing Process, Applications, Raw Materials, Manufacturers, Regional Breakup and Mass Balance”, provides an in-depth analysis of the global phenol market. Phenol (C6H6O), also known as monohydroxybenzene, benzenol and carbolic acid, is an extremely toxic compound and occurs as a crystalline solid at room temperature. As a result of its strong hydrogen bonds, it is more soluble in water than other alcohols and has a higher boiling point and melting point as compared to other hydrocarbons with similar molecular weight. Phenol is used directly, as a precursor or as an intermediate in the manufacturing process of various products used industrially and in households. The derivatives of phenol are used in various industries such as agro chemicals, automotive, coatings & adhesives, construction, cosmetics & pharmaceuticals, food, packaging, textiles, rubber and paint & ink. According to the report, the global phenol market reached a value of US$ 17.1 Billion in 2015, growing at a CAGR of around 4% during 2008-2015. The market is currently being driven by increasing demand for epoxy resins, derived from phenol, for the production of rotor blades for wind turbines and other structural elements. The global focus on wind-energy as a renewable source of energy is expected to be beneficial for the growth of this market.

Phenol-formaldehyde resins, also called phenolic resins, are employed in the manufacturing of thermosetting plastics which are used in electrical equipment. These resins are also used as adhesives in the production of wood products. Bisphenol A, a derivative of phenol is used in the production of epoxy resins and polycarbonate plastics. Epoxy resins are used to manufacture adhesives and composites required for manufacturing aircrafts, automobiles, boats, etc. Caprolactam, another derivative of phenol, is used in the production of nylon and polyamide plastics. Other industrially important derivatives of phenol include Phenylamine, used in the production of rubber, herbicides pigments and pharmaceuticals; Alkylphenols, used to manufacture emulsifiers, surfactants and detergents; Chloro-phenols used in bactericides and antiseptics; and Salicylic acid used in aspirin and other pharmaceuticals. Currently, the Bisphenol A manufacturing industry is the largest consumer of phenol accounting for the majority of the total global consumption. Other major consumers include the phenolic resins, caprolactam and alkyl phenyl manufacturing industries.
