A festival that celebrates the bond between brother and sister and marks the closure of the 5-days long festival Diwali. As per the Hindu calendar, Bhai Dooj is celebrated on the Dwitiya Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik. This year Bhai Dooj will be celebrated on 16th November. In the word Bhai Dooj – “Bhai” means brother and “Dooj” signifies the second day after the new moon. During this day, all the sisters prepare a thaali and put ‘tilak’ on their brothers’ forehead. After that, they perform aarti and pray for their happiness, health and prosperity. The brother in return takes a pledge to protect her from any harm under any circumstances. In India, Bhai Dooj is celebrated with different names in different states like Bhaubeej in Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka; Bhai Phonta in Bengal; Ningol Chakouba in Manipur and so on. Bhai Dooj is just like Raksha Bandhan as both the festivals celebrate the unbreakable bond of brother-sister love.

Stories Behind Bhai Dooj

Like any other festival, Bhai Dooj is also linked to some stories. Ancient Mythology states that Lord Yamraj (the God of death) visited his sister Yamuna in the month of Kartik on the ‘Shukla Paksha Dwitiya’. She welcomed her brother Yamraj with aarti and tilak. In exchange for that Yamraj showered his blessings on Yamuna. So, this is the day when Lord Yamraj gave a boon saying that any brother who will visit his sister’s house on this day will get extreme health and wealth.

Another story states that Lord Krishna visited his sister Subhadra on the second day after the new moon after killing the Demon King Narkasura. Subhadra also welcomed Lord Krishna just as Yamuna welcomed Lord Yamraj by performing aarti and applying tilak on Lord Krishna’s forehead.

How Bhai Dooj Is Celebrated?

On this day, the sister wakes up early in the morning and prays for the good health and prosperity of her brother.
