Child Marriage

Child marriage is defined as an individual entering a marital union before the age of 18. It is widespread among African nations as well as regions in Asia and is found to be more prevalent among girls than boys. Statistically, it is estimated that 14 million girls under the age of 18 marry each year, and one in every five girls in developing countries are married off before the age of maturity. The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) discourages the marriage of individuals under the age of 18 as they are deemed as not having the ‘full maturity and capacity to act’.
There are several causes to this phenomenon, namely poverty, lack of education and job opportunities, war and conflict as well as custom and tradition reasons. In sub-Saharan regions, parents marry off their daughters near the age of puberty to get a high bride price; while parents of Indian cultures and its neighbors do it for the reason of paying a lower dowry by marrying their daughters off at a younger age.
Studies have shown a strong correlation between level of education and the age of marriage for girls. Most parents in developing countries have the perception of preparing their daughters for homemaking rather than paying for their education in schools. It is generally perceived to be more economically rewarding to educate boys than girls and in so doing, propel the cause for uneducated girls to be married off at a younger age to be taken off by their partners or his families.
In war-torn areas such as Afghanistan, Northern Uganda and Somalia, girls are often married off to warlords or figures of authorities to ensure the safety of the girls as well as the family. In the Republic of Congo, young girls have been abducted and forced into marriage to commanders as ‘bush wives’. In 2014, more than 200 girls were kidnapped from their school in Nigeria and were forced to marry their Boko Haram abductors. They are reportedly being sold to these insurgents at as low as $12.
In many countries, it is a cultural norm to push young girls to marry young to preserve the family honor as well as the girl’s virginity before marriage. These girls are forced to marry at a young age well before they are well prepared for it, all due to fear of bringing dishonor to family and community if these girls were to lose their virginity before marriage or not being able to marry them off at an older age. Forced child marriage is mainly rooted in tradition and not religion, as no one religion has been found to advocate for such practice.

Marriage before adulthood should be outlawed. Discuss.
