Carpet yarn is used to create carpets by creating the short loops of yarn around a central point. There are two types of yarn used in making carpets, namely, natural and synthetic. Natural yarn comes from animal hair such as wool; silk is derived from silkworms. The fibers that are utilized to produce synthetic yarns can be natural, such as polyester and nylon, or synthetic, like polypropylene. Some manufacturers also manufacture carpets with blended fibers such as wool and cotton.

Carpet yarn is employed for making carpet so that it has a tight, strong, flat and smooth surface. Some manufacturers lay the carpet yarn on a spinning machine before starting to spin it. The first step while spinning is the hooking a hook in the base of a large container filled with water. The hook is turned over several times until the loop on the hook is initiated into the water. When the hook is lifted from the water, it is released and the carpet yarn starts to spin.

The second step involves twisting the carpet yarn into several strands of yarn and lifting it from the water onto the hook. The water in the container is allowed to evaporate and the result is softer carpets with a flat surface. This process is known as twisting and braiding. This procedure is utilized in creating both high quality carpets and heavy duty rugs because this enables the manufacturers to create carpets with a uniform look.

Another common technique used is needlefelt which involves flattening the fiber, twisting it into several pieces, wetting the pieces and then twisting again into the desired lengthwise position. Before installing the carpet the lengthwise felt strips are cut to the desired length. The lengthwise feel strip is then placed underneath each carpet fiber and lifted up slightly. The entire carpet is knotted together and then cut into the correct length for the installation process.

A third technique for manufacturing yarns involves cutting the yarns into shorter lengths and then sewing them together. The shorter carpet pieces are cut into equal lengths and then sewn together. The length of each strip is directly related to the thickness of each piece of yarn that is used in the carpet. For example, if there are ten meters of yarn, this would be equal to ten meters of yarn strands. The thicker the carpet gets, the thicker the backing material becomes.

The last technique relates to the building of a carpet by sewing loops on the surface of the rug. The threads that are not visible are called the eye loops. The eye loops are fed into the backing material through holes that have been cut into the fabric. When this is done, the loop is pulled through the fabric and the rug is created.
