Händlern, die Akkus unbedarft verschicken, droht zudem eine wettbewerbsrechtliche Abmahnung von Konkurrenten, wenn diese etwa durch versteckte Testkäufe feststellen, dass Versandrichtlinien nicht eingehalten werden.Die UN hat für jede Gefahrgutklasse und eventuelle Unterklassen individuelle Vorschriften definiert, wie solche Produkte für den Transportweg zu verpacken und zu kennzeichnen sind. Lithium-Ionen-Akkus sind zwei UN-Nummern zugeordnet: UN3480 umfasst den Transport von einzelnen Akkus, UN3481 den Transport von Akkus gemeinsam mit den zugehörigen Geräten. Letzteres ist danach unterteilt, ob der Lithium-Ionen-Akku separat in dieselbe Verkaufsverpackung gelegt wurde oder ob er ins Gerät eingebaut ist (egal ob fest oder wechselbar). Vor einigen Jahren waren UN3090 und UN3091 relevant, doch diese beziehen sich mittlerweile nur noch auf die artverwandten, nicht wiederaufladbaren Lithium-Metall-Batterien.

Die Aufteilung zwischen zwei UN-Nummern führt in der Praxis mitunter zu kuriosen Situationen. Beispielsweise war es für einen deutschen Akkuproduzenten unmöglich, eine neue Hochleistungsbatterie für einen Elektro-Gabelstapler regelkonform gemäß UN3480 transportieren zu lassen: Sie sprengte für alle darin definierten sicheren Umverpackungen schlicht die zulässigen Gewichtsbeschränkungen. Die Abhilfe bestand darin, die Batterie nicht alleine zu versenden: Das Unternehmen besorgte sich einen Gabelstapler und übergab dann diesen samt dem darin eingesetzten Akku einer Spedition. Das ging, weil jetzt UN3481 (Abschnitt „Batteriebetriebenes Fahrzeug“) zutreffend war, die für Versandobjekte mit eingebauten Akkus keine Gewichtsobergrenze vorsieht.

Mit der Vorschrift IATA-DGR A45 gab es bis 2009 ein Äquivalent zur SV188 für den Luftverkehr. Seitdem gelten die strengeren Packvorschriften PI965 (Akku alleine), PI966 (Akku wird Gerät beigelegt) und PI967 (Akku in Gerät eingebaut/eingesetzt). Alle drei enthalten in Teil II Vereinfachungen für Akkus mit nicht mehr als 100 Wh. Das klingt stark nach SV188, doch hier gibt es engere und differenziertere Auflagen.Bei eingesetztem oder eingebautem Akku muss etwa sichergestellt sein, dass sich das Gerät auf dem Transportweg nicht einschalten kann. Bei zugeklappten Notebooks ist das selbstverständlich, bei Smartphones hingegen darf kein Druck auf den außenliegenden Einschalter kommen. In den Originalverpackungen der Hersteller wird auf solche Details geachtet.
