Dass das Gehäuse mit über vier Zentimetern so dick wie zwei herkömmliche Notebooks ist, liegt am leistungsstarken Innenleben: Asus hat sich dafür entschieden, statt eines mobilen Ryzen-Prozessors eine Desktop-CPU zu verwenden. Der Achtkern-Prozessor Ryzen 7 1700 liefert denn auch mehr als die doppelte Performance des Notebook-Prozessors Ryzen 7 2700U und damit mehr als genug Power für alle aktuellen Spiele und sonstigen CPU-intensiven Anwendungen. Die CPU verbrät mit nominell 65 Watt TDP (Thermal Design Power) allerdings auch mehr als das Vierfache an Energie; entsprechend voluminös muss der Kühlkörper ausfallen. Hinzu kommt der Kühler für den Grafikchip, welcher ebenfalls 65 Watt verheizen darf.

Wer ein zweites RAM-Modul einbauen möchte, muss vorher umständlich den voluminösen Kühlkörper entfernen.Die Energieaufnahme resultiert in einem permanent hörbaren Lüfterrauschen von mindestens 0,7 Sone. Bei ausgelasteter CPU und GPU werden extrem laute 9,4 Sone erreicht; Gespräche auf Zimmerlautstärke sind da nicht mehr möglich. Die Laufzeiten sind arg kurz und bewegen sich in einem sehr kleinen Fenster: Je nach Last sind zwischen 50 Minuten und eineinhalb Stunden drin. Im Akkubetrieb wird zudem nur ein Bruchteil der 3D-Performance erreicht, die man bei angestecktem Netzteil erhält.

Dank Desktop-Ryzen mit acht Kernen gibt es im Alltag sogar mehr Rechenleistung als aktuelle Spiele benötigen, was das Gerät auch für Videoschnitt und Ähnliches interessant macht. Der Grafikchip ist passend zur Bildschirmauflösung gewählt; von AMDs schnelleren Vega-GPUs gibt es bis dato keine Ableger, bei denen nicht das Gehäuse schmelzen würde. Schon bei der gewählten CPU-GPU-Kombination haben die Lüfter allerhand zu tun und lärmen im schlimmsten Fall mit über 9 Sone.Von einem Mobilrechner mögen wir angesichts des Stromverbrauchs, der Abmessungen und des Gewichts aber nicht sprechen: Allein das 330-Watt-Netzteil, das man ob der extrem kurzen Laufzeiten immer dabei haben muss, ist schwerer als ein typisches 13,3-Zoll-Notebook.
