Before battlegrounds gave some semblance of structure to Whole world of Warcraft's player versus player combat, there was clearly the infinite battle relating to the Alliance capital of scotland- Southshore along with the Horde capital of scotland- Tarren Mill.

Those two areas were basically inaccessible, as there was clearly a round-the-clock tug of war taking place involving the two factions as to who controlled both towns. The Horde might capture Southshore merely to lose Tarren Mill and the opposite way round, forever and ever. The battles got so heated once in a while that entire servers crashed underneath the strain.
The classic fight was resurrected recently for An entire world of Warcraft's ten-year anniversary event, with a battleground meant to mimic the Southshore versus Tarren Mill struggle—except there's an eventual end towards battle now, as players fight to score points for their team.

Leeroy Jenkins - May, 2005
It's arguably probably the most famous singular moment in World of Warcraft history: A team of players are planning detailed tactics previous to entering a battle when one member breaks ranks, screams his very own name out, happens upon a cave and gets killed. Then all others gets killed too.
