Warsaw student has ambitions to design wedding dresses and gowns

If all goes as she plans, she hopes to be making the dress you wear for a night on the town.

Megan Hollister, a senior at Warsaw High School, received the 2016 Visual Arts Scholar honor last year and has been working under master seamstress Robbin Dillon of Folwerville on the craft of dress design.

Hollister first began designing in eighth grade, though she points to earlier in her childhood as to when the interest really started.

“I had Barbies when I was younger, I would make my mom buy fancier dresses for them,” she said. “That’s what really started it.”

She started out making simple clothing design but quickly learned that she wanted to work with wedding gowns and evening-wear.

“I decided that I didn’t want to do basic clothing design because making a simple T-shirt was too basic for me,” she said. So she began designing her ideas for clothes and putting them together on the dress form in the corner of her room.

As to why she has chosen to work with wedding dresses and evening-wear, Hollister said she likes the variety they offer.

“I like that they can be over the top or they can be a little bit simpler,” she said, adding that she really enjoys working with silk and chiffon.

“I don’t like working with a plain cotton,” she said.

Her work has not been reserved for the dress form in the corner of her room, either.

Recently, her dresses were shown at the Genesee Community College Fashion Show on April 28. And you might have noticed that her prom dresses were rather unique, considering that she designed and made them.

“(Hollister) is exactly the type of student we look for to take advantage of this program: talented, ambitious, and hungry to learn about the craft,” Jackie Hoyt, executive director at the Arts Council for Wyoming County, said of the scholarship in a press release.

After high school, Hollister hopes to keep pursuing design and dress making.

She plans to attend Buffalo State University where she will actually start as a sophomore, due to the amount of credits she’s bringing in, and will study fashion design. Through the university, she is participating in the 3-1 program where she could transfer to the Fashion Institute of Technology for her senior year.

Of course, she dreams to be a famous fashion designer some day living in New York City.

“I’m hoping in 20 years I’d be able to,” Hollister said of creating her own brand. “I want to work under somebody for a little while to get more experience.”

Hollister is the third recipient of the Visual Arts Scholarship and it was made possible through the ACWC and Creekside Fabrics in Arcade.

Her solo show, highlighting what she learned over the course of the past year, opens with a reception at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
