It's the dream of so many women: the perfect wedding day.

For decades, if not centuries, weddings have long been a longstanding tradition of ceremony and celebration. But, trust me, behind every perfect wedding was months and months of preparation, planning and creativity.

Like many hairdressers, I do not do wedding or event hair. For those special events, I suggest brides-to-be ask their favorite salon, regular stylist or friends who have had weddings and big events who did their hair and makeup. "Audition" them and make them an integral part of your "wedding team."

For this article, I enlisted some of the top professionals in the area for their style assistance.

They are Dede Crout, senior stylist and wedding designer with David Alexander Salon and Spa; Dana Heimeril, senior stylist and senior make up designer with Solace Salon and Spa; Owen O'Donnell, a top freelance makeup artist working frequently with About Faces Salon and Spa in Annapolis; and Nichole Bailey, senior stylist and wedding/event specialist with Solace Salon and Spa in Annapolis.

The long pre-wedding day planning often starts with finding the right dress and deciding the theme. Every bride has her own idea what her perfect wedding day looks like. The engagement has begun, the date has been selected, the venue decided and, now, the fun begins. All the experts agree: timing is everything. You need to plan well in advance if you are having your hair and makeup professionally done.

Do not wait until the last minute.

The experts forthis article agree: Pre-trial, pre-trial, pre-trial. That means it makes sense to have a "dry run" or "dress rehearsal" several weeks before the Big Event. This dress rehearsal gives you the opportunity to make adjustments, smooth over rough spots and correct snafus before a photographer lifts a camera.

Gather all of your ideas, magazine pictures, inspiration and show the stylist and makeup artist everything, I mean everything, you have planned for your special day. They really need to see your vision, Then, allow the professional to guide you, because not every vision is meant to or can come to fruition. Your pre-trial should not be scheduled until you have determined the style of dress you are wearing and know whether or not you are wearing anything in your hair: a veil, flowers, bows or other accessory.

Time is short but, yes, your hair and makeup should be done at least once so that you feel comfortable with the result. It is a big investment and your "look" will be immortalized in the wedding day photographs.

Crout with David Alexander's said, "Make sure you wash your hair the day before, especially if time is of the essence." She added, "Determine well in advance how many people in your party also need their hair and makeup done before the big event."

O'Donnell, featured numerous times on television and in magazines for his makeup artistry, said, "To find the look that fits you best, both the client and the artist should work together. Keep in mind your personality and what you want your theme to be."

Make sure the team you've chosen is reliable and that all the details have been worked out in advance. Some questions should be answered early on: Are you going to the salon? Is the team or stylist coming to you or, are they going to a hotel or your wedding venue?

Heimeril said, "It's all in the details. This is the one day you want to go smoothly." Bailey says, "Be realistic with your look and be very clear on what your budget will allow."

What we all agree upon is this: Don't go just for the trend of what's in. Genuinely decide how you want not only to look, but feel the day of your wedding. From traditionally classic to over-the-top crazy, weddings come in all shapes, sizes and are held in all kinds of venues.

I always suggest staying with what feels natural to you, but Crout said, "Many brides decide to go with extensions and pieces to add to the style."

Heimeril and Bailey note your stylist and team are an integral part of the day, so make sure you have chosen a team with whom you're comfortable.

The experts also agree a bride wants to consider paying attention to her eye lashes. With proper attention, lashes can enhance your look. In advance of the Big Day, you could experiment with lash extensions, individual lashes or, even, lash strips. Make certain that they are fitted and applied well. If you are happy with the final effect – go for it.

Though my field of expertise is hair and makeup, one item I can't stress enough is finding a good photographer. Your wedding (or special occasion) is really a day in which you have invested a lot. The memories and pictures will last a lifetime. Take your time. Plan in advance.

The last bit of advice from experts Crout, Heimeril, O'Donnell and Bailey is this: "Have a great time and enjoy your day. It's a celebration of love!"

Plan your day well and you could have the wedding bliss you've always dreamed of.

Cheers!
