Couple ask their grandmothers to be flower girls at their wedding

Maggie Wakefield lost her father three years ago so it was important that his parents were involved in her wedding in Pennsylvania, USA.

In a break from usual wedding tradition, a couple asked their grandmothers to be the flower girls in their wedding ceremony.

Bride Maggie Wakefield lost her father in 2013 so it was important to her that his parents had an important role in her wedding.

So she asked her grandfather, Ronald Senior, to walk her down the aisle, and his wife of 56 years, Joyce, to be a flower girl in her wedding along with her fiance’s grandmother Drue, 74.

The two grandmothers wore identical grey dresses and carried straw baskets full of flowers during the service in Gap, Pennsylvania, USA, last month.

Maggie made sure that her late father had a part in her wedding too by attaching a locket containing his photo to her bouquet.

She said that having Joyce, 75, as a bridesmaid would have greatly amused her father.

"My husband, Josh, and I decided to honour our grandmothers at our wedding by having them be our flower girls,” Maggie said.

“My father passed away from colon cancer in December 2013, so I wanted to incorporate his parents into the wedding.

“My grandfather, Ronald Sr, walked me down the aisle, and my grandmother, Joyce, was a flower girl.

“I’ve always had a very special connection to my grandparents, because they helped raise my sister and me.

“I'm sure that my father was looking down, smiling and laughing, at his mother throwing flower petals…with his father and me following from behind.

“My husband’s grandmother, Drue, has been a huge influence in his life. She is one of the most caring, gentle, and thoughtful women that I know.

“Having our grandmothers as the flower girls meant the world to us.”
