China Meltblown Nonwoven Fabrics is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with, in both the fashion and non-furrier industries. The beauty of the product is that it provides the right balance between high-tech production, which can be a little bit more expensive than other fabrics, but allows for a higher quality of production, as well as the ability to export and market the product around the world. China is already a significant exporter of clothing, due to their massive textile industry, and now they are looking to expand into other industries. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few years as China becomes more involved in the global fabric market.

The Meltblown Nonwoven Fabrics project is an investment of around USD billions between China and five European countries, including Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece and Romania. This represents a fairly significant expansion of China's textile production, as China has traditionally had a relatively low level of textile production relative to other countries. China has always been reluctant to acknowledge the role of its citizens in the growth of their economy, but it appears that this is starting to change. While there is no clear indication of any appetite from the Chinese government or the Chinese consumer for increased demand in the south, there is obviously a recognition that they must diversify their supply chain in order to remain competitive.

Currently, the demand is primarily driven by China's need for lower priced garments as it looks to rebalance its economy away from stimulus-based spending. However, it is important to note that this does not mean that China will replicate the Japanese clothe machine revolution, because they have such a different material base. However, the level of material used in the Chinese garments is clearly much higher than most countries. For example, the average Japanese garment is made from 7.7 ounces of bamboo fiber, while the average Chinese garment is made from 13.5 ounces of bamboo fiber. While this may not seem like much, it is a considerable difference when you consider the weight of the average person in Japan, versus the weight of the average person in China.

China is currently the United States' largest non-American manufacturer of clothing, but the trend is rapidly changing. Many companies such as H&M and Levi are currently expanding into areas where China's fiber production levels are far lower than those in the United States. China is becoming the key players in the clothing market as its economy continues to grow, but the US based companies are following closely behind.

China has been the driving force behind the growth in the global fabric industry. However, in order to continue its lead role in the global fabric industry, the Chinese government needs to improve their regulations on domestic production. Currently, the textile market is based on local consumption, which is fueled by a lack of regulation and excessive over-production. China needs to take control of its domestic textile industry and re-orientate its production process away from excessive over-production and towards a more level playing field. If the Chinese government does not do this, they may see their lead slip away as other countries catch up and create more competition.

Currently, China has around 1.3 million tons of non-woven garments being produced; however this is only a portion of the global fabric market size. The real figure is closer to a few million tons. Even though China is a growing economy, they still have a long way to go to catch up to the major fabrics in the world. As the US economy continues to falter, the global fabric market size will continue to grow and China will find itself increasingly isolated in the global fabric market.
