Chennai, India: e-care has always been pro-actively involved in giving back to the community that it operates in – especially with organizing blood donation camps that have been recognized by the local governments. e-care has now embarked on a major Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project joining hands with the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM) with the signing of an agreement on 2nd March, 2016.

The project entails setting up a Roof Top Solar Photovoltaic system in Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Ashok Nagar, Chennai using solar power, which has been conceptualized by Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Department of Electrical Engineering and Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director IIT Madras.

The school experiences significant power cuts during the summer season and due to poor lighting, students at times are forced to sit outside the class room for taking classes. Power interruptions also affect the students taking their final exams for the year, as those exams are held in the summer months. The Roof Top Solar Photovoltaic system is being implemented in one of the blocks of the school and would benefit about 600 students. There are totally 3,500 students studying in the school and the school was severely affected during the Chennai floods.

The proposed system will utilize lights and fans running on DC power, instead of the usual AC power using technology developed in assistance with IIT Madras that would minimize power conversion losses. Using solar energy also reduces the carbon footprint as it is a clean source of energy. This is just the beginning and e-care plans to implement this system in all the other blocks based on the success of the system with this ‘pilot’ phase.

Speaking on the occasion of signing the agreement, Deepak Sanghi, Managing Director of e-care said, “We are confident that a lot of our employees would also like to support in doing CSR activities along with the company. The CSR need not always be monetary but can also be in the form of you dedicating some personal time in improving the lives of others who need help. Together, let us all transform our environment and serve the needy.”
