Menopause is a natural cessation or stopping, of a woman's menstrual cycle. It marks the end of fertility in women. Menopause is said to have occurred when she hasn’t menstruated in 12 consecutive months. A woman undergoes menopause generally between the ages of 45 and 55.
During the onset of menopause, the period first becomes less frequent over a few months, however, in some cases they can stop altogether.
The menopausal transition may begin years before the last period. It is also referred to as perimenopause stage. During this time women may experience hot flashes, spotty menstrual cycle and other symptoms. Though people refer to this period as menopause, menopause does not occur until 1 year of the final menstrual period.
