Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Health, a psychotherapy clinic in Westport, CT, helps clients better manage emotions and behaviors through Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

[WESTPORT, 03/17/2021] The Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Health is a private group practice with skilled psychotherapists dedicated to individualized mental health services. They offer Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) sessions that help their clients manage their behaviors and emotions better in a warm and nurturing environment.

What is DBT?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy is evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy. It differs from the other types of CBTs with how it primarily helps patients regulate emotions that may be considered intense.
DBT also helps build interpersonal relationships through behavior changes, acceptance, and validation.
The clinic’s overarching goal for using DBT is to enhance the patient’s quality of life.

Issues DBT Addresses
The clinic found that DBT is especially useful in addressing the following problem areas:
● Addictions
● Anger
● Anxiety
● Borderline personality features
● Depression
● Eating disorders
● Emotional ups and downs
● Impulsive behaviors
● PTSD, in combination with high risk behaviors
● Relationship or family conflict
● Self-harm
● Suicidal thinking

Modes of Treatment
The clinic offers the following four main modes of DBT treatment based on ongoing research:
● Weekly individual therapy (45 minutes, 1-2 times per week) – these sessions are logged in a diary card used by both patients and therapists. These track the progress and other helpful notes.
● Group DBT Skills Classes (90 minutes, once per week) – These sessions have been called the ‘backbone’ of the DBT model. Here, both patients and caregivers learn skills alongside each other.
● Phone coaching – Individual DBT therapists are made accessible to patients and caregivers for necessary skills coaching in between their normal scheduled sessions.
● DBT Consultation Team – The team meets and discusses the ongoing program and whether it is still adherent to the DBT model.
