The First Men in the Moon by H. G. Wells – Dystopian Books Review
The novel is about the adventures of two men, one a businessman named Bedford and the other a scientist named Cavor. Bedford is a typical businessman, always thinking about making money and ways to increase it. Cairo is intellectual and always in search of new knowledge and experiences. They both meet each other in the countryside in Lympne and become friends.
Cavor tells Bradford about his invention of a device that introduces weightlessness, nullifying the effects of gravity, and named it the Cavorite. This device using the phenomenon of weightlessness allows people to transport to space. Bradford agrees on using it with the hope to make a profit. They both travel to the Moon and after their landing, they discover weird creatures. As the sun rises the frozen temperature of the moon falls to a moderate climate suitable for vegetation causing plants and insects to grow to gigantic size.
They discover bizarre insects like five-foot-tall creatures called the Selenites who feed on worms. At first, they try to hide, but they become captured by the Selenites or the Moonies. Bradford and Cavor both react differently towards their capture. Cavor communicates with the Selenites while Bradford continuously tries to escape, but with as much gold he finds on the moon.
He finally convinces Cavor to escape and they both flee the prison but they capture Cavor. Bradford returns to earth. On earth, he uses the gold collected to purchase a business empire but failed to return to the moon and rescue Cavor. This happened after he lost the cavorite. After many years, Cavor sends radio transmissions to earth from the moon. He informs everybody about life on the planet and the advanced society established by the moonies. It happened with the help of his knowledge and teachings. He informs earth about his communication to the Grand Lunar, but they interrupted his broadcasting.

An apocalyptic disaster and the way its aftermaths affects the life of the novel’s main character. Adam Jefferson, the protagonist, went on an expedition towards the North to discover his billions. It announced this reward by a dying millionaire who testified in his will to pass the wealth to the first person who stands on the North Pole. This starts a cut-throat competition among the people of the world. Adam gets on board and replaces his fiancé’s cousin named Countess Clodagh. In the novel, Adam meets a priest named Mackay, who curses this whole idea of a voyage.
Adam paid little attention to this and went on the journey towards the North. After a series of events and adventures, Adam reaches the North Pole, becoming the first man to stand on it. There he sees an island in between a wide lake and saw a purple cloud in the sky. He smells a pungent peachy odour and fainted but wakes up to return to his ship. Adam became shocked to see all the dead animals and people. He travelled through cities, islands, countries and notice dead people. After realising he is the only man left on the earth, this evokes a sense of superiority and supremacy in him. The main character burns all the cities he visits.
He constructs a palace of gold for himself. He came across a young girl in one city he burned down. She was not aware of anything, having no sense at all as she lived her entire life inside a cellar and escaped after the fire. Adam became attracted to her after spending all the time teaching her how to cook, dress and read. The story ends with both of them accepting faith in God. They become the progenitors of humanity being Adam and Eve.
Final Say on Science Fiction Novel The Purple Cloud.
I find the book interesting but somewhat controversial because of the religious figures presented in the story. The plot remains interesting and well-developed. I rate this novel 7 out of 10. Would I re-read the novel? No. Am I glad I read it? Yes.

The Volume 1 of the book became known as Na Srebrnym Globie (On the Silver Globe). The story presents an expedition of astronauts, including four men and a woman. The failed outcome of this mission gives the trilogy a sensational plot. The story begins with a miscalculated, harsh landing of a spaceship on the moon. It results in the death of Irish astronomer O’Tamor, the leader.
The only surviving voyagers include a woman named Marta (Martha) and two men Jan Korecki, the Polish narrator of the novel, and a British engineer Piotr (Peter) Varadol. After being deserted on the rough lunar surface, Varadol and Marta become the ancestors of a new generation.
Volume 2 known as Zwyciezca (The Conqueror) describes the original voyage. Jacek a scientist launches a rocket towards the moon to start a scientific expedition. He sends Marek, an astronomer, to find information about the centuries-old voyage. Marek lands on the moon, shocked to receive a warm welcome by a group of abnormally looking men called the Selenites. They thought of him as their Messiah.
He came to know about the condition of the lunar planet ruled by Szerns. The planet comprises original inhabitants of the moon having black wings, devil appearances possessing supernatural powers like telepathy, and organs able to discharge electric shocks.
Stara Ziemia (The Old Earth) Volume 3 depicts planet Earth in the 27th century. The US government imposes and forces the population towards communalism. It creates a society where people form part of the different elite or slave classes. In this world, two Selenites make their way to the Earth by Marek’s spaceship. They become captured by humans and sold out to the city.
