The first opportunity to frame your shots properly is as you're shooting the video footage. Unfortunately for many amateur videographers, framing the shot will be the last thing they're considering when they take their movies. Often times just getting a shot, any shot, is the overriding thing that's going on.

Even the videographers who've proposed their shoot, can sometimes run into situations where they planned is not exactly what they get. So now that the video is in the can, so to speak, is there anything which may be done to improve the situation? The solution is yes and it resides in the video editing procedure.

As soon as you've shot your video you have another opportunity to frame your pictures throughout the video editing procedure. Even if you preplanned your shoot and did everything just how you intended it, you may realize that you need to re-frame some shots to be able to concentrate the story.

As you are reviewing your raw video footage is the perfect time to make some notes which shots that you want to re-frame. Use this opportunity to get a general feel for the framing of your own shots and focus in on the shots which you may improve with re-framing.

Once you begin video editing the sequence, some of those notes may change, so make sure you go with your gut instincts as you edit the sequences. At times you will want to tighten up shots to add effect by crating tighter two shots and occasionally you will just be centre your topics in the framework. The more secure your shots are, the easier it is to re-frame them.

Whenever your camera wanders and is unstable, you might need to move with the camera in order to keep the framing constant. As soon as you've corrected the basic issues with your framing you can then move on to telling the story in a more interesting way. Slow movement inches can be used to include empahsis to a specific shot, blow ups may be used to create tighter angles which will enable smoother cuts and on and on and on.

Luckily for today's video editors, the video editing process is electronic, which allows for quite large changes in frame size withou degrading the picture. Experiment with altering your framing and you will push your video editing to a new stadium.

Never be afraid to try new things as you edit since the reverse button is the friend and takes you right back where you began with very limited work. Video editing is a creative process and the more things that you try, the more you raise your editing skills because a number of them turn out to be better than you may have envisioned.
