Sustainability is about the smart farming- and Smart farming is based on the modern farming concept that looks into the use of data, technology, and innovation to improve agricultural production by cutting down the inputs significantly. This process is applied by the information-driven farming approach, which maximizes the need for it to be observed. It assists the food producers to enrich their crop production in order to cater to the need of the present generation without compromising the ability of next-generation.

Challenges Faced By The Agriculture Industry

Presently, the agriculture industry and farmers are facing many challenges, such as –raise the cost of suppliers, climate change, and change in consumer preference for transparency and sustainability, labor shortage, etc. All these challenges are must be tackled, if we are to make sustainable progress in any of them. In the last 10 years, agriculture technology has been adopting new technology and equipment to maximize production level by reducing the cost.

Different types of technologies are being used in agriculture for Food for health & food and sustainability , especially in indoor vertical farming, automation and robotic, livestock technology, modern greenhouse practices, precision agriculture and artificial intelligence, and blockchain.

Sustainable Agriculture Practices

Today, the agricultural industry is used in various practices with a combination of science and technology. Below are the major agriculture practices:-

1.Reducing or eliminating tillage. In traditional plowing methods, farmers prepare their land for planting & control weed problems, and due to this, it causes a lot of soil loss. Now, farmers insert seeds directly into the land without disturbing the soil. This modern method reduces erosion and improves soil health.

2.Planting cover crops- It is the cost-effective weed control modern technique which is used to prevent crops and build soil health. It also helps to prevent erosion, reduce the need for herbicides and keep weed in check.

3.Applying integrated pest management (IPM). There are different types of practices involved in these practices, such as mechanical and biological controls. These are used systematically in order to keep pest populations under control while reducing the use of harsh and chemical pesticides.

4.Integrating livestock and crops- As per the smart farming trends to keep both animals and plant production separately. Stay animals far from the areas where there feed is produced. It can be the best way for profitable farming.

The main purpose of connecting all these smart practices together is diversification. “Keep in a simple” is the best way to sustainable agriculture and food production. In order to cope with the rapid pace of change and maximized the uncertainty, sustainability must be seen as a process, rather than a singularly defined endpoint to be achieved.
