Understanding Adoptive Immunotherapy for Cancer

Dr. Lee Drinkard explains the various types of immunotherapy for cancer.

Irving, TX – September 13, 2019 – Adoptive immunotherapy is an approach that assists a patient's immune system in fighting cancers. T cells are harvested from patients and grown in the lab where they are multiplied and given back to the patient. Also known as cellular adoptive immunotherapy, this technique has produced positive outcomes when patients with various cancers are infused with tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes to treat their disease.

“The adoptive transfer of lymphocytes has been successful in treating patients with malignant melanoma, chronic lymphoid leukemia, lymphoproliferative disorders, and much more," explained Dr. Drinkard. “There are various types of adoptive immunotherapy for different cancers.”

Here are some of the types of adoptive types of immunotherapy techniques used in treating cancer:

• Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CART) T-cell – This is a technique that has been used in patients with very positive results in clinical trials. Patients with hard to treat, advanced lymphomas and leukemias have benefited from this approach.

• Tumor-Infiltrating Lymphocytes (TILs) – This is a type of adoptive T cell immunotherapy which is based on tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes. It is used to treat malignant melanoma with very high response rates that have resulted in cancer regression and prolonged survival in patients.

• Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)-Specific T Cells – This technique has provided successful results as prophylaxis and treatment for the post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease. It expresses an array of latent EBV antigens with type 3 latency in hematopoietic stem cell transplant patients.

"With more research underway, adoptive immunotherapy for cancer will soon be used on a wider range of hematological cancers," continued Dr. Drinkard. “Advanced developments and strategies regarding these techniques will help to treat more patients with metastatic or advanced disease in the future."
