Hello Dear IAS Aspirants,

I am feeling very privileged and humbled while writings this informative article for future officers of India. There are naturally many doubts which arise in our minds while preparing or thinking about this most coveted exam of India. I will try discussing all these issues one by one with you, but first thing, Firstly the most important question and rightly so, which arises in our mind is that :-
What is the Right Time to start preparing for this exam:
- Is it during School Time that one should take first step ? or,
- or, During College Days, one should seriously start preparing for IAS exams ? or,
-or, Finally After Completing Graduation, one should pursue this service.

Actually, To find the answer for this question, we first need to understand the following aspects:-
- The nature of this exam
- What is expected from a candidate?
- What are they looking for in a candidate?
- What makes a good officer?

The answer to these questions is that they are looking for mature, well-informed and balanced personalities who could take care of the whole districts or bigger departments of India. This Maturity comes through vast reading and understanding of our history, polity, culture, geography economy and of everything which affects the country and its people.

We study history, geography etc, and subjects only to grasp the real India and have the feel of the journey of India through ages; and its standing and relationship with outside world. The duty of an officer is to act responsibly to make the lives of people better. Ultimately, what a civil Servant has to do? He has to use all his knowledge and expertise to make a healthy and a better place for people to live in and to make people enjoy their life to the fullest without disturbing norms of the society, and help them in becoming responsible citizens of the Country.

What is the Right Time for the Preparation for IAS Exam ?

So, if we are a genuine and hardworking student right from the start of our school- life, then it means we are preparing for civil services since that time only. During school-time, when our minds are tender, we come to know and realize the surroundings quickly and easily and that knowledge is really long-lasting which gets imbibed in our personality and makes us an aware and well-informed citizen. So, the foremost important thing is to take your schooling very seriously.

In case we have been an unfortunate being and our schoolings has not been proper, and we aim to qualify Civil Services exams then right after 12th, is the right time to start preparing. Next 3-4 years would help you to regain what all you have lost during school days.

Remember, it is not reading history and geography, rather grasping these subjects and to feel these subjects we have to spend time with them. Things take time to develop and persistent efforts would be needed to have felt of these subjects.

So, if your schooling is not up to the mark; get serious after school and prepare simultaneously with your graduation, probably by enrolling yourself in one of the best IAS Academies of your area.

There are some situations when you are too much stuck up with your graduation for example, if you are doing B.Tech, BSC etc which are itself time consuming; then focus only on your graduation subjects and do not divert your attention towards serious IAS preparation. But remember, Daily newspaper reading, some extra readings, improving your vocabulary and basics cannot be ignored.

You have to keep yourself abreast and update of all important events around you and how they are influencing the world.

Try to make balance between your graduation subjects and this general preparation by keeping yourself updated.

Always Remember: Balanced approach is the important key to success here. They are ultimately looking for balanced people who have the calibre to make balance in life.

After you complete your graduation; you are now around 21-22 years old. Now is the right time that you should prepare full-throttle for it. It would take around tow years of dedicated efforts; if you have already spent a fair time in building your base and you have a good command over language.

Remember: Good command over English makes your journey and struggle less troublesome.

This is the time, when you should not postpone your preparation.
We know that sometimes it may take more than one attempt to clear this exam. Now the age is on your side. But if you start it later than this may make you panic, if you do not succeed according to your planning.

At this stage, if you feel like that this is not your cup of tea, you have some other option in your career , but after 25-26 years of age, options start diminishing which may frustrate you.

So, Good Luck!

So, ultimately IAS is about gaining knowledge, imbibing that in your personality and expressing that when the need arises. Joining any reputed IAS Academy may provide you mentorship which helps to remove hurdles in your preparation and keeping your spirits high and well- oriented.
