Class in exile includes choosing a specific role: marauder, Dueler, Ranger, shadow, witch, Templar or scion.

Due to the way the game skills system works (which I'll cover shortly), there is no actual benchmark capability in the course itself. Every class in the game can use all the skills in the game. Instead, each course is associated with a different set of statistics and identifies your starting point on skill web (which I'll cover later). In general, if you want to play the melee remake game, you are likely to want to play the role of a marauder or Dueler, while those who pay more attention to magic are likely to choose witches. But you can definitely have a spell-based marauder, and it's certainly built that way. This is one of the advantages of the game because the player's career can not decide what skill combination can be used, so the tasks that the player can complete must have more flexibility.

In addition, your class determines which ascendancies you can access, which act as specialized subclasses, which have their own specific but smaller, more passive trees, which provide very powerful effects and to some extent specialize your role, but even make these very open to a variety of versions. Each class has three different councils to choose from, with the exception of one scion (which can be empowered by all other councils).
