Accounts of RuneScape players were hacked by phishing sites that tricked players into giving their game logon credentials. Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard stated that account theft and the use of phishing websites are a serious problem in online gaming. "Where there's evidence suggesting someone has committed an offense, as is the case in any case of phishing or hacking, Jagex works closely with law enforcement agencies around the world to bring these people to justice.

Gerhard stated, "Our primary concern is to protect our player community as it knows the high value that players place on unique accounts." The theft of a RuneScape account shouldn't be considered any different from the theft of valuable items such as a car or television. Players invest a lot of time in developing their characters.

Our investigations have revealed that only a few individuals were behind over 95% of account hijacking within RuneScape. We have no tolerance for anyone trying to compromise the security of this lively community. A PCeU spokesperson confirmed that a 23-year-old was arrested by police in Somerset, Avon & Somerset, on Tuesday 24 November. The arrest occurred in connection with an allegation of hacking and theft of RuneScape accounts. When the breach was discovered, PCeU detectives worked closely with JAGEX to secure the evidence needed for an arrest.

"People who attempt to disrupt the experience of others playing online may be guilty of criminal offences and may be prosecuted," said the PCeU Spokesperson. "The PCeU continues to work with the gaming industry and will investigate these claims where it is necessary."
