Phoenix, AZ – October, 2019 – If you or a oved one has been hurt on the job in Arizona, your employer’s insurance company may ask you to see a doctor different than your treating physician for an IME or Independent Medical Examination.

Since many work injury patients are not sure whether the medical examiner is biased or not, it’s important to understand the purpose of the IME. So, here it is, along with tips to make your IME go smoothly.
Purpose of an Independent Medical Examination
It’s in the best interest of your employer’s insurer that you are seen by an independent doctor. This –

• verifies that the treatment provided by your doctor is appropriate and necessary
• verifies that the facts you’ve provided about your accident are consistent with your injuries
• verifies assessment of permanent work restrictions, permanent disability or the need for the supportive medical care
Tips for a Smooth IME
Going to see an unknown doctor may be overwhelming, especially when you are aware that their report could prevent or reduce your benefits. But if the insurance company requests an IME, you need to attend that, under Arizona law.

Here are some excellent tips to help you prepare for the examination.

• Attend the IME. Even if you do not want to go, an IME is not optional. You have to attend the examination.

• Be punctual. If you are late or miss your appointment, you could be charged a fee or your benefits may be suspended.

• Don’t cancel at the last minute. If you can’t attend for some reason, you must inform your attorney immediately.

• Complete all forms accurately. Fill out all forms regarding your work accident and injuries accurately and honestly. Don’t exaggerate your injuries or pain.

• Be honest. Describe your pain honestly when the IME doctor asks.

• Explain any gaps in treatment. If you have any gaps in your treatment or care for some time, explain the reason why. For example, if your claim was denied or you could not afford it, there is no harm in saying that.

• Be courteous. Answer the doctor’s questions courteously and respectfully.

• Keep a track of the time spent with doctor. Often, the doctor will only spend limited time with you and most of the IME will be conducted by the physician’s assistant. Keep track of the time spent with both.

• Don’t volunteer information. Answer any questions the doctor asks, but be brief. Any more information than requested might be used to deny or reduce your benefits.

• See your doctor. If possible, see your regular doctor before your IME to resolve any discrepancies.

• Don’t discuss what you and your attorney have discussed. Your discussions with your attorney are confidential and shouldn’t be discussed with the IME doctor.

• Don’t ask for a diagnosis or recommendations. At the end of the IME, don’t ask the doctor for his diagnostic or recommendations. You will get a copy of the report within 1-2 weeks.

Any disputes about the IME need to be resolved through the hearing process, and it’s important to have an experienced attorney on your side.
