Cervical cancer is one of the easiest cancers to detect in its early stages, but at least 11 percent of American women have not been adequately screened for this type of cancer through a routine Pap smear. Dr. Debora Sedaghat of OC Women’s Care discusses the latest recommendations by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists for frequency of cervical cancer screening.

“According to the ACOG, data have demonstrated a significant reduction in cervical cancer cases and mortality rates for women who engage in routine screening. Most cervical cancers occur in women who are not adequately screened, translating to late treatment for these cancers and poorer outcomes for the victims,” says Dr. Sedaghat, a gynecologist in Orange County as seen at http://www.ocwomenscare.com/obstetrical-care/ . “Women should see a gynecologist yearly for a breast and pelvic exam every year and should have routine Pap screenings according to their doctor’s recommendation. For most women, this means every three years.”

ACOG reports that with adequate screening, the rate of cervical cancer has been cut in half as well as mortality rates from this disease. The ACOG also advocates for the use of the HPV vaccine. HPV has been linked to higher incidents of cervical cancer in women.
