Bellmore NY, Advanced Spine & Muscle Therapy Center and Dr. Doug Catoggio DC are pleased to announce that the doctor has the experience and knowledge to assist athletes to recover more quickly. A major method used in chiropractic measures is A. R. T. In Long Island Active Release Technique (A. R. T.) is suitable for pain relief and improvement of circulation. The technique was originally developed and patented by P. Michael Leahy, DC.

The technique is particularly helpful in dealing with athletes' injuries. When there are problems with muscles, tendons, fascia, nerves and ligaments, the movement-based massage techniques resolve many of the problems which go along with over-used muscles. Injuries from athletic activities typically arise from three types of over-used muscles. These include pulls, tears, and collisions which cause acute conditions.

Over-use of muscles can cause an accumulation of small tears in the muscles, as well as inadequate oxygen to the soft tissues. Each of these three factors may cause the body to build up scar tissue in the damaged area. Scar tissue causes the muscle fibers to become bound up. More scar tissue means shorter and weaker muscles, nerves can become trapped and tension on the tendons causes tendonitis. These factors reduce the range of motion, weaken the muscles and cause pain.

During an ART session, the doctor does both examination and therapy. The hands are used to evaluate the texture, movement and tension of the muscles, fascia, ligaments, tendons and nerves. Where abnormalities are found, there are precise movements and directed tension with the patient's assistance. There are about five hundred moves which are unique to ART.
