The Pledge is in place to safeguard the privacy, collection, maintenance, and use of student personal data. By becoming a signatory, YellowFolder commits to comply with the existing federal law and regulatory guidance regarding the collection and handling of student data.

The pledge was developed by The Future of Privacy Forum (FPF) and the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) with guidance from school service providers, educator organizations, and other stakeholders. The Pledge has also been endorsed by the National PTA and the National School Boards Association.

The pledge makes clear school service providers are accountable to:
• Not sell student information
• Use data for authorized education purposes only
• Not change privacy policies without notice and choice
• Enforce strict limits on data retention
• Provide comprehensive security standards
• Be transparent about collection and use of data
