When you buy a used car, you might save a lot of money, but you also risk being misled if you aren't careful. Odometer rollback is one of the most common types of vehicle fraud, in which fraudsters tamper with the car's odometer to lower the mileage in order to increase the car's sale value.
How can you determine the mileage of a car?
The vehicle's mileage indicates how far it has been driven over its lifetime. Many people, however, are unaware of how to check a car's mileage.
If you are unsure about how to check car mileage, please follow the steps below:
1 – Fill up your car's tank to its capacity and record the odometer reading.
2 - Drive for a specific distance to determine your car's precise mileage.
3 - Refill your car's tank to the top and record the odometer reading again.
4 – Subtract the distance travelled from the amount of fuel refilled.
5 – To calculate mileage, divide the distance by the amount of fuel used.
The steps below explain how to lower mileage on a car. However, do note that it is just for informational purposes.
1 - Re-install the instrument cluster - If you replace the instrument cluster, the mileage will be zero.
2 - Reconfigure the odometer - Before reassembling the odometer, remove it and adjust the values.
3 – Tinkering with the knob – The temperature and remaining fuel percentage knob near the dashboard can be used to tamper with the odometer readout.
Please note that it is not a legal practice to lower your car's mileage and is a punishable offence.
