On July 22, 2019, Alfa Chemistry, a leading chemical company located in New York, announced the launch of a wide range of featured biomaterial products for expanding their production lines to meet the increasing demands from their customers.

Biomaterials are high-tech materials used to diagnose, repair, or enhance the function of human tissues and organs. In other words, it is possible to repair and replace living tissue with natural or artificial material biomaterials. Although biomaterials can perform, enhance or replace the function of an organ or tissue that is lost due to disease, injury, etc., they cannot restore a defective body part. Biomaterials can be divided in to the following three categories: metal biomaterials, inorganic biomaterials and organic biomaterials.

Metal biomaterials
Metal biomaterials are widely used in the orthopedic and dental fields due to their high strength and fracture resistance. Since they are mainly used for load-bearing applications and are subject to the rigors of daily activities such as walking, chewing, etc., they must also have sufficient fatigue strength. The interatomic bonding of metal biomaterials imparts properties such as electrical conductivity, fracture resistance and formability. Metal biomaterials are primarily used to replace hard tissue. And these metal biomaterials can be divided into five categories according to their basic metals, including stainless steel, titanium-based alloys, cobalt-based alloys, Ni-Ti alloys and magnesium alloys.

Inorganic biomaterials
Inorganic biomaterials include bioceramics and bioglasses for orthopedics and dentistry. They have unique mechanical properties and high modulus hardness. Bioceramics can be divided into three categories: bioactive ceramics, bioabsorbable ceramics and nonresorbable ceramics. The bioactive ceramics directly form chemical bonds with the bone, the bioabsorbable ceramics are resorbed in the physiological environment and actively participate in the metabolic processes of bone formation, and the nonresorbable ceramics are biologically inert. These bioceramics have been widely used in different clinical applications. They are all biocompatible and have been used as implants for medical applications.

Organic biomaterials
Organic biomaterials are mainly polymer materials. According to the properties of polymer materials, they can be divided into synthetic materials (eg. polyurethane, polyester, polylactic acid, polyglycolic acid, other medical synthetic plastics and rubber) and natural macromolecules (eg. collagen, silk protein, cellulose, chitosan, etc.). And according to the usage of polymer materials, they can be divided into bioinertmaterial, bioactive material and biodegradable material.
