Any appliance that ensures a constant supply of heated water is called a water heater. The heating process is initiated by an energy source which increases the temperature of the water. Hot water has universal application both at home and in industries.
Domestic uses of hot water are bathing, cleaning, cooking, etc. Traditionally water was heated in pots, kettles and other varieties of vessels but this did not ensure a continuous supply. This led to the development of appliances that could heat water at a more extensive rate. Today there are a wide variety of water heating appliances that are available.
Storage Water heaters (with Tank)
Commonly called geysers, they are the most common type of indoor water heater. They have a cylinder in which the water is constantly kept heated and ready for use. A typical tank storage water heater contains between 100 to 400 liters of water depending on size. The methods of heating vary according to make and range from gas, propane, heating coils, solar power etc. The cylinders are typically vertical for easier storage. The only disadvantage is that over time the water in the tank cools down requiring the heating system to be reactivate to reheat the water over time.
Tank-less Heaters
Tank-less heaters, also known as insta-heaters and on-demand heaters, are gaining in popularity around the world. They generate high heating power and instantaneously heat water as it flows through the device. A copper heat exchanger is the preferred heating medium used in tank-less heaters due to their high thermal conductivity.
Solar Water Heaters
Solar power heaters are being increasingly used around the world because of the emphasis on utilizing renewable sources of energy. They are powered by solar collectors that are placed outside the residence. The basic type of solar heaters are the direct-gain type. They send the potable water directly to the collector. The other common types of water heaters are indirect and closed-loop heaters.
Electric Shower Heads
Electric shower heads are a relatively simple type of water heater. They have electric heating elements which are set directly into such shower heads to instantly heat the water as it flows through. Electric showers have a simple system that work’s like a coffee maker. However it has a larger water flow capacity. They were originally made from chromed copper or brass which are relatively expensive. Since the 1970’s the advent of plastics have lowered prices to increase affordability.
While water heaters in its various forms is an integral part of everyday life, whether at home or at a factory, there are many dangers and hazards involved in using them.
• If a water heater to overheat, it can cause an explosion which is potentially harmful to anyone standing in close proximity. This danger is greater in the case of industrial heaters.
• A person may even incur burns and blisters from a water heater.
• Water heaters can also cause safety issues regarding bacterial contamination which can lead to poisoning, infections and diseases.
