For all those who are confined to wheelchairs, walkers and mobility scooters, getting around can be tough. It isn’t as easy for them to just walk out of their home and take the most convenient transport possible to go somewhere else. They are restricted by their loss of mobility. Not only can they not do many things, they are dependent on others to assist them with most of their activities.
Much is being done for the disabled these days though. Society at large has recognized their special needs, and there is now an entire industry dedicated to making the world a more accessible place for disabled people. Automobile dealerships have specialize in mobility vans and other mobility and accessibility equipment alone.
Buying a wheelchair accessible vehicle isn’t easy as it costs a considerable sum of money. This is why instead of buying a brand new vehicle, if you already own a car that is suitable to accessibility conversions, it is a better idea to get that modified. This way you can save some of your expenses and you don’t have to buy another car altogether.
But before making the choice between converting an old vehicle or buying a brand new there are certain factors to consider:
Converting the vehicle you already own
If you have a vehicle that can be satisfactorily modified for wheelchair accessibility, you can save yourself a lot of money. Don’t worry about losing the warranty on your vehicle from the original manufacturer as most dealerships provide conversions that leave the terms of the warranty intact. In fact, you will be able to get separate warranty for all the additional equipment that is being installed in your vehicle. If you choose to go with this option, all you will have to pay for is the conversion and related services.
Buying a new wheelchair accessible vehicle
If you own a vehicle that cannot be converted for accessibility, your best option is to buy a new vehicle. Sedans and other small cars are not big enough for modification so you might have to buy a minivan or van for mobility support.
If you buy a pre-modified vehicle you can enjoy the advantages of using a brand new car with new conversions and equipment. The entire vehicle will be covered under the same warranty policy and it will be easier to sort out your insurance for it. Also, buying a brand new vehicle means it will be delivered to your home as soon as you would have made your purchase instead of having to wait.
To convert or not to convert
No one can decide for you which accessible vehicle you should buy as no one knows your needs as well as you. Your preferences, circumstances and financial situation will influence your decision so make sure you have a good idea of all three before you make a choice and purchase.
