About Alopecia Areata (AA)
Alopecia Areata (AA), an auto-immune disease is a condition which means hair loss from a few or all parts of the body or bald spots usually on the scalp in the first stages because of the body's malfunction to distinguish the "self". So, it is also known as spot baldness. For more articles about alopecia click here http://marbohair.com/.
5 classifications of Alopecia Areata
1. Alopecia Totalis- When the patient loses all the hair on the scalp, leading to complete baldness.
2. Alopecia Areata Barbae-When this disease may be limited only to the beard.
3. Alopecia Universalis- When your all hair is lost.
4. Alopecia areata Monolocularis -Baldness in only one spot on the head and may occur anywhere on the head.
5. Diffuse Alopecia Areata- A condition where hair may be lost scatterlier over the whole scalp on the head.
AA Totalis as well as Alopecia Areata Universalis occur rarely.
5 Signs and indications
1. The first and the most common symptom which you will notice in a person suffering from this disease are minute bald areas on the scalp; either oval or round in shape and it is common in children. The area of bald skin looks both normal and smooth. In extreme cases, it causes complete hair loss. In most small patches, the hair grows again within 6 to 12 months.
2. The itching area of hair loss can be very painful.
3. Abnormalities on the surface of your nails-Your finger and toe nails may develop denting or pitting or superficial splitting causing redness in that particular area. Such a condition that causes the nails to become dull, brittle, thin, and finely longitudinally ridged is called Trachyonychia or sandpapered nails or even twenty-nail dystrophy when it occurs on all the twenty nails of the toes and fingers. It is mostly common in males.
4. Uneven loss of hair generally on one side of the head in comparison to the other that happens over a short period of time.
5. In severe cases, hair loss involves the entire scalp or the entire body, including the eyelashes, eyebrows, eyelashes, public area, underarm, beard but it occurs rarely.
Diagnosis of Alopecia Areata
Alopecia Areata is not infectious. Depending on the examination of the areas of your hair loss and your symptoms, your doctor will be able to diagnose alopecia areata. Trichoscopy, a method of hair and scalp treatment is used for diagnosing both hair and scalp diseases. A biopsy is hardly required unless there is still doubt as to diagnosis of alopecia areata. In case of a biopsy, a small piece of skin of your scalp is removed and tested in a laboratory. However, it cannot be prevented. It is advised to call a doctor only if:
• Your hair stylist tells you that your hair is thinning for some or the other reasons or that you develop patches of small bald spots on the scalp. It may be due to straightening of your hair.
• Thinning of your beard, eyebrows or eyelashes over a period of time or that you have less hair beneath your underarms or in the public region of your body.
