Air tools are used by plumbers and other contractors who work with large materials such as drywall and ceiling tiles to create lines and holes. The tools also help contractors complete their work more quickly by reducing the amount of time the tools take to perform a task. However, using these tools incorrectly can damage your tools and reduce their usefulness. Here are five common mistakes that new contractors often make while using air tools:

Inflating the air or gas before using the tool. Newly-installed electric tools take only a few seconds to inflate. Contractors who inflate their pneumatic tools should wait at least 60 seconds between filling and deflation, or else the tool may damage its compression hose. Many new air tools have accessories available, including a cylindrical rubber sleeve or air pump. Avoid filling the tool too soon, or the accessory could fail altogether.

Not disconnecting the power supply before using electric tools. Air tools that run on batteries have a small electric motor and a power supply, so in order to operate the tool properly, it must be disconnected from the power source when not in use. Many electric plumbers do not realize how simple it is to disconnect the power supply. This simple step can prevent serious accidents.

Using an incorrect power source. Using a battery-operated air compressor to fill air tools is safe, but many electricians mistakenly use gasoline to power their air compressors. While both are effective, only a battery-operated compressor has the extra power to create bigger suction areas. This means that it can fill more area per battery charge. Be sure to check the manual for correct usage and don't use gasoline to operate your tools if you want them to last longer.

Keeping your tools' performance quality high. Regular maintenance is important for any electrical device, but most air tools need more attention than others. Wear a safety helmet, mask, or gloves, and be sure to clean the compressor or brush regularly. Dust and dirt can accumulate inside the air compressor and reduce its efficiency, so regular cleaning is important to keep power tools' performance at its best.

Safety is important. If using an air system, always read the manual for the particular tool you're using. You should also wear safety goggles or earplugs when using compressed air tools. In addition, never operate electric tools while wet; always unplug the tool first and then set it up, according to the directions on the manual. Keep your hands, and your children's hands, away from the tools. Children should also wear a mask or gloves and never touch the tools, even if they are well-maintained.
