Hotels and Restaurants Have Thousands of Open Jobs

Many tech companies are laying off employees. On the other hand, the leisure and hospitality industries need more staff due to the lack of potential employees. (24/04/2023)

Microsoft and PayPal have laid off thousands of employees in the past few months. Even Facebook's parent company, Meta, is anticipated to report another wave of job losses this week alone.

Unfortunately, many technology corporations that had ramped up employment during the pandemic are now reducing staff due to an unsteady economy and declining growth prospects.
Impressive Employment Surge
In contrast, the leisure and hospitality industries have been a major driving force behind an impressive surge in job growth over the past couple of months. Of the 236,000 nonfarm payroll employment increase in March, 72,000 jobs are from the leisure and hospitality industries.

Demand Higher Than Supply
The hospitality industry is experiencing an explosion in demand for their services—restaurants, bars, and hotels can hardly keep up with the job openings they need to welcome this influx of customers.

US Census data reveals that sales at food establishments and drinking spots grew by 7.2 per cent compared to December 2020, a 25.2 per cent surge from January 2021. Additionally, US Travel Association research has revealed travel spending was four per cent above pre-pandemic levels during January 2021—highlighting just how eager people are now feeling about exploring new destinations once again.

Hotels and Restaurants
Hotels and restaurants have been able to reclaim a significant portion of their jobs lost during the pandemic, yet much progress must be made. According to the National Restaurant Association (NRA), table service establishments have been down 311,000 positions since February 2020.

With many businesses adapting to innovative practices throughout these months, it will only be a matter of time until all roles can be restored to full capacity again.

Understaffed
A recent study by the American Hotels & Lodging Association found that 87 per cent of hotels face a staff shortage, with housekeeping as one of their primary needs. According to estimates from the US Travel Association, more than two million jobs in leisure and hospitality have yet to be filled across America.

Similarly, 62 per cent of restaurants admit they are understaffed, and 87 per cent believe they will hire more employees in the upcoming six to twelve months if qualified candidates exist.
